Crypto-currency has taken the world by storm, like a teenager who just discovered their first pimple. It’s the buzzword in finance and politics, and the potential game-changer for the entire financial system.
Now, the head of Thailand’s opposition party, Srettha Thavisin, is offering every citizen in Thailand a chance to join the crypto-craze with a proposed 300 Crypto Airdrop. That’s right, he’s promising every Thai citizen 10,000 Thai Baht (approximately $300) in digital currency if his political party, Pheu Thai, wins the upcoming general election in May.
“Our country has been economically bruised over the last eight years, with less income and more expenses for the people. The current government has been feeding IV drips with small money handouts. That’s not the right way and doesn’t stimulate the appropriate and right economic growth,” says Srettha Thavisin.
But hold your horses, folks! The proposed airdrop has raised some legal concerns. The Bank of Thailand declared Thai baht stablecoins to be illegal in 2021. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, a minister in the prime minister’s office, has expressed concerns that the airdrop proposal could have major implications for the country’s financial system.
Critics have also questioned whether the funds would be better utilized to alleviate poverty in the country. But hey, who needs universal healthcare when you can have universal Dogecoin, am I right? 😂
Recent polls suggest that the election is likely to be a close one, with Pheu Thai reportedly having approximately 46% of the vote in recent surveys. And with the use of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in politics becoming increasingly common, it seems like anything is possible these days.
“The money will be disbursed using digital wallets built on blockchain technology that can be spent on goods and services in one’s neighborhood,” says a representative from Pheu Thai party.
Well, if this airdrop happens, we’ll all have a chance to either strike it rich or go broke. It’s a toss-up, really. And while we’re at it, let’s announce Bitcoin’s candidacy for Prime Minister of Thailand. Its platform? A stable economy and no more hard forks. 😂
Meanwhile, in India, the Reserve Bank of India had banned banks from dealing with cryptocurrency exchanges in 2018, but the Supreme Court overturned the ban in 2020. Now, it looks like India is ready to join the crypto bandwagon, but will it be a bumpy ride or a smooth sail? Only time will tell! ⏰🚣♀️🌊
“I asked my financial advisor about this crypto airdrop and he said it was a great idea. Then again, he also told me to invest in Beanie Babies in the 90s, so take that with a grain of salt,” says one skeptic.
But all jokes aside, this move raises some interesting questions about the role of cryptocurrency in society. Is it a legitimate form of currency that should be embraced by governments?
